Overview

Green Garden - Balik Pulau is a nostalgic coffee shop nestled on the vibrant Main Road of Balik Pulau, Pulau Pinang. This humble spot captures the essence of a traditional Malaysian kopitiam while serving up some of the region’s most beloved local dishes. From the moment you step inside, the atmosphere transports you back to simpler times, where the aroma of freshly brewed local coffee mingles with the sizzle of woks on the stove.

At the heart of Green Garden’s menu is the iconic Char Kway Teow. Fried to perfection by an experienced vendor, the dish boasts a smoky, slightly charred flavor that Penang locals prize. The soft yet chewy rice noodles soak up the wok hei, delivering every bite with layers of complexity that few places manage to achieve. This signature dish stands out not just for the taste but also for the authenticity—something that patrons frequently commend for surpassing alternatives found in busier hubs like George Town.

The Asam Lemak Laksa is another highlight, offering a comforting balance of spicy, sour, and creamy notes that speak to the culinary heritage of the region. Prepared by a nearby laksa vendor within the same coffee shop, it complements the menu perfectly, inviting diners to experience a harmonious blend of flavors that reflect Penang’s rich food culture.

On the beverage side, Green Garden embraces the kopitiam tradition by serving robust local coffees and an assortment of teas—from classic milk tea to fragrant Chinese teas. These drinks pair effortlessly with their food offerings, rounding out the meal with a warm, satisfying finish. The shop’s unpretentious setting encourages both locals and travelers seeking genuine Malaysian flavors to relax and enjoy a taste of everyday life here.

Beyond the food, the presence of familiar faces—like an aged uncle expertly frying the Char Kway Teow—adds to the welcoming charm. For those craving traditional flavors and a genuine eating experience away from touristy spots, Green Garden offers a remarkable journey into the heart of Balik Pulau’s vibrant food scene.

We were actually there for Asam Laksa and chanced upon this hidden gem char kway teow for just 6RM! Much better than many we tried at George Town (including Ah Leng). Also very kindly served us at the Asam Laksa place.

Classic and nostalgic local kopitiam (coffee shop) which serve local coffee, tea, milk tea, Chinese tea, also softdrinks plus beer. The fried Koay tiaw have the old style (kocabi) taste. The laksa can be ordered from the corner laksa store. Great to visit such nostalgic place. TQ

Char Koay Teow was good and if you feel like splurging, buy some roast pork from the nearby chicken rice stall and you will be hitting high calorie heaven.

the shops on the same row are small and narrow, hard to find place to park bicycle. however the lady boss selling paos of this shop was nice to allow me to lie my bike on her stall. and she was ok to let me pay her in TnG and she paid cash to the boss selling drink who has no TnG. The brown sugar larvae bun was delicious, I don't know if it's original. Came 2nd day to try the char keow tiao, it's was good too. The shop looks run down but the food certainly on the opposite.
